For future reference, is it better to import the .ini file through Everything. or is just copying it over (which I usually do) Is sufficient?

Checking "Copy Everything 1.5a settings and data" copies the following files:

The location of these files is typically %APPDATA%\Everything and %LOCALAPPDATA%\Everything
If "Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything" is disabled, these files are stored in the same location as your Everything.exe.
These files can be manually copied before starting Everything 1.5b.

Is there any sort of error checking of the .ini file if being imported?

No extra error checking is done.
The Everything-1.5a.ini is compatible with the beta version.
